DETROIT (WXYZ) — Many businesses spruce up their window displays during the holidays, but thanks to a design contest, almost a dozen businesses have teamed up with artists to attract more eyes.

Many say supporting local businesses is a must during the pandemic and this is a fun way to drum up attention.

Asia Hamilton of the Norwest Gallery has helped pair 13 artists with 11 businesses for the Detroit Window Design Classic.

“This is Christmas in September. Come check out these amazing windows.”

It is Detroit Month of Design and it’s being celebrated with the window design contest.

“This was an opportunity to create some walkability in the community, to get some foot traffic to these stores, and to get some people in these places.”

Ten businesses are in Northwest Detroit on or near Grand River Avenue, including Norwest Gallery.

One business is in Southwest Detroit.

Art lovers are encouraged to go to the businesses, check out the window design, and vote for the best one.

Each display has the name of the designer and a QR code. You scan it and then vote for that artist.

The winning artists walks away with $500 and bragging rights. But for many, it’s all about helping small businesses during these difficult times.

“Be excited and bring the community together because that’s what we need in order to keep our businesses striving,” Asia added.

The contest ends September 30th.
